With the All Out label grooming Glasgow talent Casement for successive releases on labels like 1Forty, Deep Cover and a 2018 album for Wile Out, it's the Nice Up! Label up next that delivers three dubby variations of urban and club sounds from the UK. Dubstep leads the charge in 'Shards' with syncopated drums and stepped percussion submitting to stabs of huge reverberating bassline rave, with touches of baile funk nestled in behind cosmic melodies of synth in 'Cables'. 'Night Garden' adds a solid trip of tropical weightless grime to the EP as well, and a nice left field alternative for the dancefloor or club. So, in short, this is Spooky doing what Spooky does best, as he supplies four of the UK's most exciting grime MC's with the perfect through ball as he unleashes the riddim pack for the 'Haunted Joyride Version Excursion', courtesy of Oil Gang. We first hear the London city warlord: Riko Dan who touches down with tight patois flows on 'High Power', before the skippy flows and untouchable energy of Mez is let loose on 'R9's Haircut'. The veteran vocal tones of Nasty Jack then arrive on 'S.U.N', before we round up with the party ready flows of PK's 'Flow Sensei'.
When he's not releasing clubbier house wares from the likes of Detroit Swindle, Waze & Odyssey or The Carter Brothers, the Australian-based Kevin Griffiths can be seen releasing what he calls Eclectic Musical Magic via his Isle Of Jura label. Following a stream of releases since 2016, first up for 2020 is a reggae disco cover of 'Ain't Nobody' by Jamaican artist Yvonne Archer. Originally released in 1980 (40 years ago!) this release comes packed with a Lovers Rock leaning 'Checking Out The Way I Feel' with a Jura Soundsystem edit and dub of the original - stripping back guitars for newer delay techniques, washier vocals and extra groove effects for the first of two licensed releases from John Rubie that will appear on Isle Of Jura this year. For this latest offering from the Noizon crew, we welcome Hubwar, a Montpellier based producer fusing futuristic dub themes with metallic dubstep ideas to create and incredibly original sound.

This EP, entitled '140', kicks off with a track that defines the above beautifully in 'Simple One', as roughneck bass tones meet syncopated melodies with lively effects. This is then followed by the fluttering melodies and grizzly bass synths of 'Dubwar' before the spooky tones of 'Heptabeat' run riot closely after. Finally, 'Flir1' brings those progressive chords back into play with an eastern European feel, rounding off the project perfectly. The relationship between dub reggae and it's extended grandchild dubstep has always been an exciting one and we love nothing more than hearing a soulful vocal over a more dubstep inspired original instrumental. Here we see the combination of Shandy, Tenor Youthman and Tailored Sound provide us with just that as 'Rise & Shine' combines blissful sub patterns, spacey horn textures and catchy vocal lines to give us a certified smash. This project also comes complete with an additional 'Sax Version', just for good measure. We are absolutely loving the influx of new reggae music we are seeing hit the store here at Juno Download, with this latest offering from Dougie Conscious, King General and Dr Hekele giving us exactly what we want.

This track, entitled 'Tell Them Again', treds the perfect path between grizzly dubstep and system-ready roots, an effect achieved through a combination of writhing synthesizers and chanted vocal structures. This one also comes to us complete with an official dub mix, courtesy of the Conscious Sounds team.
